My grandfather, Frederick Claxton, who had been in WWI as a sniper, was shot in the stomach and gassed. He came home to London and recovered and later became quite crippled with arthritis from time spent in the trenches. He died at the age of 58 from stomach cancer. I consider him a hero because he protected his 5 boys, my uncles, from having to endure the horrors of WWII by ensuring they were apprenticed as machinists, making them vital for manufacturing munitions and therefore exempt from combat.
